Carolina Safe: A Survey of Abuse and the Family Environment in the Carolinas

A dual frame approach (random digit dialing and age-targeted samples) was used to collect 2611 telephone surveys with mothers in the Carolina’s assessing family life and childrearing practices. Six surveys were administered in all: two statewide surveys (in North Carolina and South Carolina); and four county-level surveys (in Durham and Guilford counties in North Carolina as well as Greenville and Aiken counties in South Carolina). This was the first of three data collection rounds. The goal of this round was to collect baseline data. Subsequent data collection is scheduled for 2004 and 2006, but will only target Durham and Greenville counties (intervention sites) as well as Guilford and Aiken counties (control sites). The statewide surveys will not be repeated. The project is a joint venture between UNC at Chapel Hill, Duke University, and Clemson University.
