Heart Failure

As a part of the Living Well with Heart Failure Study being performed by the UNC Sheps Center for Health Services Research and UNC Hospitals, the SRU interviewed participants aged 30–80, who had heart failure and took furosemide. Researchers were trying to determine if self-management programs, which can reduce hospitalizations and mortality, for patients with heart failure are more efficient when designed for patients with low literacy versus the usual self-care. This study was a randomized controlled trial which occurred from November 2001 to April 2003. The SRU conducted telephone follow-up calls to reinforce adherence. The first wave of follow-up interviews began in April 2007.
